Overview
This course will enable delegates to work and engage with parents/carers who have any sort of learning disability. By the end of the session delegates will be able to:-
- Explore the impact of learning disability on parenting capacity.
- Discuss the importance of a trauma-informed approach, recognising that many parents who have learning disabilities have experienced abuse, discrimination and poor mental health.
- Explore how parental past experiences, including their own experiences of being parented, may influence parentings styles and their relationships with professionals.
- Recognise behaviours that may be labelled as “resistance” or “non-engagement” and consider the underlying emotions.
- Explore how to build trusting professional relationships and work collaboratively, balancing empathy and a strengths-based focus with safeguarding responsibility.
- Consider how best to adapt all forms of communication and their approach so that parents are genuinely understand and participate in conversations and decisions involving their children.
- Identified practical changes to their own practice.
