Autism: Exploring Sensory Awareness

Course Aim:

The aim of this course is to explore the impact of sensory processing difficulties on people with autism spectrum disorders and offers a method of assessing for sensory differences, including the design of an individual sensory profile The course will then determine how the assessment results can be used to plan environments, teaching strategies and communication plans for each individual.

Course outcomes: 

Participants will be offered the opportunity to:

  • Identify hypo and hyper sensitivity
  • Explore methods of assessment
  • Recognise ways of integrating the assessment results into everyday life and school
  • Distinguish what to avoid in order to prevent a meltdown
  • Acquire techniques for desensitising and building up sensory tolerance.
