Autistic Spectrum Disorders – 1 or 2 days

Aim:

The aim of this course is to increase participant’s knowledge in relation to the Autism Spectrum and their ability to develop strategies to support children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

Day One Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be offered the opportunity to:

  • Understand what Autism is and why it’s a spectrum disorder
  • Understand the history of Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
  • Explore the main difficulties associated with the “Triad of Impairment” and how these may manifest in behaviour
  • Understand the process of sensory integration including the difference between hyper and hypo sensitivity.
  • Become familiar with the most commonly used Alternative and Augmented Communication tools used by autistic children.
  • Understand strategies to help minimise anxiety for autistic children

Day Two Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be offered the opportunity to:

  • Understand the diagnostic criteria for Autistic Spectrum Disorders
  • Understand in detail how autism can impact on the life of individuals
  • Understand effective interventions for supporting children with autism.
  • Explore the process of writing a social story and have the opportunity to write one.
  • Understand TEACCH and its practical application.
  • Know where to find sources of information advice and support.
