Understanding and working with parental substance misuse

Target group
Staff who work regularly with children and families and may be required to carry out assessments where parental substance misuse is an issue.

Aim
To provide participants with an opportunity to develop their understanding of parental substance misuse and use this knowledge when assessing the needs of children of substance misusing parents.

Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between experimental, recreational and dependent substance misuse;
  • identify how values and attitudes about substance misuse may affect the assessment process
  • identify how substance misuse can affect parenting capacity
  • describe research which identifies the impact of serious parental substance misuse on children, and to use this research to inform an assessment of need; and
  • use the multi-agency network effectively to inform the assessment.
