Working with young people who have been abused
Aim
To raise awareness of the impact of abuse on victims and the important role that workers in a residential setting have in helping children and Young People recover by providing support through active listening & reassurance, and opportunities to deal appropriately with their emotions in a safer environment.
Outcomes
By the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Outline reasons why all concerns or allegations must be taken seriously and acted upon
- Explain how abusers isolate and silence their victims and gain misguided trust of protectors by means of grooming behaviours
- Explain the impact of abuse on victims and those they come in contact with
- Explain how to respond if a child / young person makes a disclosure
- Explain how trauma-response can lead to miscommunication and misunderstanding between a worker and a child or young person they are working with; how to predict and manage such situations
- Explain the importance of negotiating with the individual and resident group when establishing boundaries of behaviour
