Working with the impact of sexual abuse: meeting the needs of survivors
Target group
Staff with a particular responsibility for safeguarding children.
Aim
This one day course aims to raise practitioners awareness of the impact of sexual abuse and enable them to better support victims and their families in managing the effects in both the immediate and longer term recovery process.
Outcomes
By the end of the day delegates will be able to:
- Explain why all concerns or allegations must be taken seriously and acted upon
- Outline how perpetrators of sexual abuse isolate and silence their victims by means of grooming behaviour and the long term effects of this
- Outline the impact of the legal process on the victim, their family and anyone they have contact with
- Outline the effect of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and Stockholm Syndrome
- Outline the impact of the trauma of sexual abuse and how this can lead to misunderstanding and confusion when trying to make sense of the world
- Outline reasons for principles and practice safer working guidance
- Recognise and manage the emotional impact of working with sexual abuse
- Describe the purpose and structure of recovery and self protection work for the individual and the family
- Outline what would need to be in place before considering rehabilitation of the abuser to the family
