Protecting children from harm through safer recruitment practice
Duration: 1 day
Target group
Managers of children's residential & field work services, who already
have knowledge & experience of working with child abuse & are
involved in conducting the Warner compliant recruitment, screening &
selection of staff.
Aim
To equip those who are involved in the recruitment & selection of
staff with the knowledge & skill required to effectively implement
safer recruitment procedures, which include necessary screening processes,
e.g. visit to establishment, preliminary personal interview & selection
interview.
Outcomes
By the end of this 1 day event, participants will be able to:
- complete an outline selection of residential staff & implement the Warner Report recommendations in the recruitment and staff
- explain the agency recruitment, interview & selection policy & procedure in place
- list checks that need to be in place to prevent & detect abuse
- explain why & how any 'bad' feelings about any staff member must be followed up
- plan & implement the screening process
- select & ask appropriate questions that will explore the applicants' life experience & how this has enabled them to develop the qualities, skills & aptitudes
- set questions that will explore a candidates attitudes, understanding
& expectations in areas such as:
- motivation for working with children & young people
- personal experience of parenting & being parented & caring for other people's children
- boundaries & approaches to discipline, including sexual boundaries & attitudes
- education, health, including mental health
- religion, racial, cultural & linguistic issues
