Participating in child protection conferences

Target group
Staff at all levels who may be required to participate in a child protection conference.

Aim
This one day course aims to give those responsible for child protection conferences an opportunity to reflect on the skills needed for successful participation and to consider what has been learnt from research and Serious Case Reviews regarding the role child protection conferences in managing risk.

Outcomes
By the end of the day, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role, purpose and contribution child protection conferences make in relation to the analyses of information and management of risk
  • Define good practice in relation to participating in child protection conferences
  • Rehearse a number methods that can be used to address challenging or disruptive participants or conflict within a meeting
  • Enable all those present to represent their personal / agencies views & fully participate in discussions & the decision-making process
  • Understand the way in which decision making might be affected in a group setting
  • Use lessons from research and Serious Case Reviews to develop their communication skills
