Managing transitions for children and young people

Target group
Social Workers, Residential Workers, & Foster Carers responsible for children as they move from home to placement or between placements.

Aim
This one day course aims to assist those working with Looked After Children in promoting emotional stability for children as they move from home to placement or between placements.

Participants should have attended the following courses prior to this training:

  • An introduction to child and young person development
  • Promoting positive environments for children - understanding and working with attachment and resilience

Outcomes
By the end of the day, participants will be able to:

  • Apply theories of attachment and loss to children who are Looked After
  • Ensure that care plans take account of the need to promote a sense of security and develop resilience through paying attention to the protective environment
  • Understand some of the factors which may contribute to placement breakdown
  • Work with children, their families and carers to manage periods of transition, and make effective plans that focus on the needs of the child
