Blood Borne Viruses HIV, Hepatitis B&C and other sexually transmitted infections

Duration and method:
The course consists of two whole day sessions and two half day sessions and will take an action learning approach. Participants will be asked to complete tasks between sessions.

Aim
This course is designed to support and develop supervision practice within an integrated child care service. It will use the commissioning agencies supervision policy as the basis for considering how supervisors can best promote safe effective child care practice.

Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:

  • Have an awareness of transmission routes, treatment and prevention of major blood borne viruses including HIV, Hepatitis B & C and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
  • Have an understanding of the principle of universal precautions and basic methods of infection control including high standard of personal hygiene to reduce the spread of nosocomial infections such as Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium Difficile (CD).
  • Be able to advise on adequate and simple measures of prevention techniques as well as promote an holistic approach to sexual health and the prevention of STI's and BBV's.
  • Be able to encourage the promotion of safer sex practices among clients from vulnerable groups with whom they may have contact.
