Assessing the needs of children in situations of parental mental ill health
Target group
All staff who may be required to carry out an assessment where one or
more parent has a mental illness
Aim
This one day course aims to explore best practice in assessing children's
needs where parental mental illness is an issue. The day will draw on
material in Being Seen and Heard: The Needs of Children of Parents with
Mental Illness (A video training pack published by the Royal College of
Psychiatrists in 2004) and the Crossing Bridges training materials (DOH
1998)
Outcomes
By the end of the day delegates will be able to:
- identify where parental mental illness may be having an adverse effect on children's development
- describe the needs of children where one or more parent has a mental illness; and
- apply the ecological approach of the family model (Crossing Bridges 1998) to assessment and intervention
