Undertaking Initial and Core Assessments

Target Group
Social work staff with responsibility for completing initial and core assessments for children in need and/or children subject of a child protection plan.

Aim
To highlight the importance of the Assessment Framework for Children in systematically gathering and analysing information in order to describe a child's needs and develop an effective plan.

Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will have been given the opportunity to:

  • Understand the role that the National Assessment Framework plays in the assessment of children's needs
  • Develop skills for working with children, families and other professionals to gather appropriate information using the frameworks three domains
  • Develop the capacity to use professional judgement in analysing the information gathered in order to reach decision that are defensible
  • Consider how to select and use appropriate tools with a view to assisting the analysis of information
  • Build on strengths to develop and review effective outcome focused plans for children
  • Consider the value of effective and purposeful records
